Handsome Jack: Hero or Villain

by: Gage Stankiewicz

!!!!SPOILERS!!!!

What if I told you that Handsome Jack wasn’t a villain? Or that the reasons behind his outrage towards the vault hunters had to do with something they did to Jack’s family? Or if I said that the Vault hunters were the reason why Jack wears a mask? Or how about I told you that his actual name wasn’t Handsome Jack in the first place? I know this all sounds crazy but its all true. Before you go and try to tell me how I’m wrong let me explain.

First of you are all probably thinking “how could Handsome Jack be so mad to the point where he tried to wipe the Vault Hunters off the face of Pandora? They didn’t do anything to deserve extermination!” Sure thinking about something like that would make someone look like the embodiment of evil, but here’s a fun fact. In the very beginning back when Handsome Jack liked the vault hunters  he went on a trip with them. He wanted knowledge and power but when he got what he wanted one of the vault hunters, named LIlith, shot the Helios symbol sending the sheards directly into Jack’s face causing the symbol to be burned on his face completely destroying his facial features. When he got back to Hyperion he changed his name, got a mask, got one green eye because his other blue eye was now blind, and then killed Tassiter, who used to be the president of hyperion, to gain his place as president of Hyperion. Yes I know Jack did kill the president of Hyperion, Tassiter, but he had betrayed Jack. So in the high level of stress Jack attacked him. In a way Handsome Jack was demonstrating on how he wasn’t the same person when he got back from his trip with the vault hunters and how he was more powerful than ever.

Ok now you all are probably like “Wait he changed his name I thought it was always Handsome Jack!” let’s all take a deep breath and go back in time. Before Handsome Jack became a “phyco” and started to kill people for revenge he was actually a calm and shy guy. Handsome Jack wasn’t always named “Handsome Jack” he actually gave that name to himself. His real name is actually John but he changed it because he thought it suited him better. The reason why he went from John to Jack was because the name John ment “The grace or Mercy of the lord.” then on the other hand the name Jack means “God is gracious.” he changed it due to the “Mercy” meaning of the name John. he didn’t want to seem like he had any mercy left for the Vault Hunters due to all the things they have done to him.

Ok so his name changed. But why is Jack still mad? What do you mean when you said that he Vault hunters did something to jacks family? Here let me tell you one of the many reasons behind Handsome Jack’s hatred towards that vault hunters. His hatred really lit up in flames because they had done something to Jack that he has never forgotten or forgave, and that was killing his only daughter named Angel. Jack had sent Angel to go see what the Vault Hunters were up to but when they found out that Angel was a spy they took her and killed her making Handsome Jack watch in complete horror as his little girl died and he couldn’t do anything to stop it since he was on the other side of a screen. This all made Jack just snap so he had to do something about it by trying to avenge his daughter for the death that she did not deserve in any way.

Yah his daughter died. But what happened to Jack at the end? At the supposed end of Jack’s story he tried to raise the Warrior to get rid of the Vault hunters once and for all. But his plan went wrong and the Vault hunters killed the warrior. After killing the warrior they ended up killing Handsome Jack as well. This was an extremely sad ending for Handsome Jack. But don’t get all sad since this will not be the last time we see Handsome Jack. In Tales From The Borderlands, Handsome Jack does return but he isn’t the same as he was. But that’s a story for another time.

Let’s face it: We all thought that Handsome Jack was a villain right when we got introduced to him. But now since we got a look into his past and saw why he really was doing those actions, he isn’t a horrible guy like everyone thought he was. From having to put on a mask to having his daughter killed, the rough spots in his life all have one thing in common the Vault Hunters. The Vault Hunter Lilith shot the Halios symbol made Jack have to wear the mask, the Vault Hunters killing his only daughter which made Jack snap, the Vault Hunters even killed Handsome Jack. So Handsome Jack shouldn’t be a Villain. His ture title should be the hero because he is in fact the Hero of his own story.

If there is any other reasons why you think Handsome Jack is not a villain and would like to share your ideas on why, or if there are other character that you think are not villains, then by all means please comment and I’ll add it into this blog! Then I can make another blog based off of the other villains you spoke of! If you have nothing to speak of then feel free to share this with your other gammer friends and see if this changes their minds on Handsome Jack! Thank you for reading in on this topic!

Why you should watch walking dead, and why Daryl should be frontrunner

By: Jakaila Davis

I’ve always had quite an aversion to horror shows and films. So when I was exposed to the gorey world of the walking dead, naturally, I freaked. For three days I walked around the house with a knife clutched tightly in my hand against my side. Although I knew it was irrational, I didn’t care, my only regret I didn’t have a gun to protect me too. The walking dead is a very broad world, with games, TV shows, and spin offs being made public and shared, you can find anything you like. If you have quite the fondness for video games telltale has three full seasons and two DLC’s. If your a person who needs to feel the page turning underneath your fingers, there are comics that have 183 issues and counting. Fear not if you’re a person who needs to see the story playing out in front of you, 8 seasons are waiting along with a spin off, “Fear the Walking Dead.” Mysteries, drama, and action that’ll make your mind run rampant are in no shortage in The Walking Dead. All the way from trying to figure out how the virus started and how it will end. To all out war TWD (the walking dead) keeps you guessing and always on your toes excited for what’s to come. However, it is not for the faint of heart. Gorey blood baths and gruesome deaths also litter the series. If you can’t handle certain scenes of legs being crudely chopped off, blood spilling, and brain matter flying, you might need to reconsider your taste in TV. Out of all the walking dead characters I have a growing fondness for Daryl dixon played by Norman reedus. Daryl is quite possibly the greatest character there is, certainly the strongest. Daryl, as a character was not even supposed to be included into the show. When Norman Reedus auditioned for the role of Merle Dixon, Daryl’s shabby brother, they were so moved they had to make a new character. Daryl has lived through a lot, from getting impaled by his own arrow, to losing his brother only to find him later where he has to escape fighting him to the death. To killing his brother, being captured and tortured, losing Beth, one of the only people he showed blatant concern for. Even though he is a remarkable character, it sometimes lands him in the center of controversy. One centered around Beth, The younger sister of Maggie Greene. Daryl and Beth had a very good friendship, however some viewers thought their treatment to each other was rather inappropriate, considering Beth’s character was 16 when she was introduced. Their friendship consisted of “serious piggyback rides.” Hand holding, the occasional drink, long talks which are rare for Daryl and hugging. Seems harmless since they were never confirmed to be in any type of romantic relationship. His next controversy wasn’t until much later, when Negan arrived waving around Lucile. After Negan kills Abraham, violently smashing his head, Daryl gets up, punching Negan. Some fans think that this causes Negan to smash Lucile on Glenn. That is not the case because Daryl’s character is not present in the comics and Glenn still dies. The most recent controversy has to do with the departure of Andrew Lincoln, who plays Rick Grimes. As previously stated by Beth, Daryl is the last man standing from the original group. The only other person who will still be on the show from season 1 is Carol. With Andrew Lincoln leaving, another character will have to step up as the new front runner. Some fans of the show, would not like to see Daryl who is one of the candidates fill that role. Of course me and other Daryl fans would love to see that. Of course Maggie’s pregnancy will prevent her from even being on the frontlines once she starts showing, and soon after she has the baby. So it would make sense for Daryl to be the one to step up. At this point it’s between Daryl and Maggie. Daryl is clearly the most equipped to survive such a catastrophe as a zombie apocalypse. His hunting and tracking skills, coupled with his fearlessness with killing walkers and with people, makes him a perfect candidate. This is easily seen when Negan’s bat was raised and came too close to hitting Daryl’s head. He didn’t even flinch and stared down Negan.  Let me know what you think in the comments. Who’s your favorite character and who should be the new front runner of the show.

Travel Guide to Lake Tahoe, Nevada

By: Kaia Depuy

**Lake Tahoe, Nevada is a beautiful place with lots of gorgeous fluffy white snow, brown fuzzy bears, and lots of breathtaking views over the glistening water. During the winter, Lake Tahoe is very cold and blanketed with sparkling snow. During the summer there is sparkling sun and stunning beaches.**

Winter:

When traveling to an amazing place like this it is important to always carry a camera with you, you could also use your phone. Although no camera or cell phone will ever capture the true beauty of Lake Tahoe. Along with your camera, you will want to be sure to bring your heavy winter coat, snow pants, hats, gloves, scarves, and anything else you like to layer yourself with. Snow boots/winter boots are also very important for every or almost every time you walk outside the house. Fuzzy or warm socks are also a necessity to make your trip more enjoyable for you and your traveling companion(s).

  • You will need to bring under layers to go underneath the coats and snow gear. How many of each article of clothing depends on how long your stay is, but you will want to bring intimates, t-shirts and/or long sleeves, leggings and/or sweatpants, sweatshirts (hoodies are super comfy), and your toiletries.
  • There are lots of fun things to do in Lake Tahoe while visiting during the colder months. From personal experience, I love going skiing and snow tubing since it is so fun and everyone enjoys it! You could also just play in the snow and have snowball fights or make a snowman. Just wait and see what summer brings!

Summer:

In addition to winter, there are also many exciting activities you could be a part of including relaxing and swimming at the beach in the crystal clear water, beach bonfires, boating, small road trips around the lake, and so much more.

  • In order for you to pack appropriately for the summer onths you will bring the opposite that you brought for the winter. T-shirts, shorts, sandals/flip flops, and bathing suits are what you need to bring. You could also throw a couple sweatshirts and a pair of sweatpants in your suitcase incase the temperature drops at night. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and all your toiletries are also needed for this trip to Lake Tahoe. No need for your winter coat and snow pants for the incredible warm weather! I hope you enjoy your experience in this lovely area as much as I loved living there for most of my life, maybe you will even want to move here yourself!

Plane activities:

There are many simple but entertaining things you could do to keep you and your traveling mates occupied while flying. Playing card games, listening to music, watching movies, chatting, reading, even sleeping! The list could go on and on.

Car activities:

While in the car driving to Lake Tahoe, you could play the alphabet game! It is quite simple but will keep the people with you occupied while they try and find each letter of the alphabet around them on anything they can see. You could also play card games, that don’t require the cards to be put on a flat surface, as well as watching movies, chatting, listening to music, and sleeping.

**All in all, no matter what season it is I guarantee that you as well as your friends and/or family will have an amazing time visiting Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Since there is a large selection of activities and things to do, everyone will be satisfied with the trip. You might also find some entertaining things to do on the plane or car ride there!**

Let me know if there are any questions about what to bring, activities, or anything else you’re concerned about for your journey. And if you found this post helpful for your travels, be sure to share it around so that others can experience the same joy and fun for their trip!:))

I am always sure about the Superhero Movie

Written by Chris Johnson

Sometimes in life, you’ll have a crappy day. Maybe someone keys your car, maybe you get to work late, or maybe you get an accidental vasectomy after learning your wife died at Thanksgiving dinner. Regardless of what makes a bad day, there is one movie that can turn your day around. The Superhero Movie, written and directed by Craig Mazin, is a coming of age story about Rick Riker, a teenage boy who lives with his aunt and uncle, Lucille and Albert. As well, his best friend is Trey, who happens to be his confidante. Rick has a crush on Jill Johnson, who is dating the local bully, Lance Landers, nephew of Lou Landers, the local terminally ill businessman.

The story seems to be a spoof on mostly the X-MEN, Batman, and The Fantastic Four, with characters from the respective franchises coming into view. However, the movie plays out as if it were the first Spider-Man from 2002. There are many jokes throughout the movie, but crude humor dominates all. If you’re not a frequent patron of Dick’s Last Resort, you might feel a bit worn out early on. But with Leslie Nielsen in this film, there’s quite a bit of witty, highbrow humor mixed with the crass, lowbrow humor of this film.

I personally would consider this to be Drake Bell’s magnum opus. After years of success, he met one of the largest challenges to his career yet. There are some who say this was a waste of his talent; I would say quite the opposite. Even Disney and Marvel would come to agree with this. This movie portrays very strange foreshadowing, as in recent years, Drake Bell has played Spiderman in television series on the Disney channel.

Even if there is crudeness and what may be mistaken for as lazy writing, this story actually displays some symbolism that I have not seen since I watched the Watchmen movie. Throughout the film, there’s this message of fighting against fate, this message of trying to resist change and fight against the future, which is seen as utterly evil. Everything goes away eventually, and needs to make room for more things, and continue the circle of life. Those who attempt to live past their prime in the film and not accept the reality of the situation tend to show off negative characteristics as early as the character is seen, at least until the scene reverts back to bladder and puberty based jokes. And what makes this more interesting is that it isn’t some “you snooze you lose” type of fairy tale, that makes you want to sleep before it could ever get to the good part. No, this film gets your attention, and keeps you awake. It also teaches you how not to be, in contrast to said fairy tales.

So whenever you have had a bad day, don’t hunker down and stress eat, don’t kick yourself, and don’t lose faith in the world. Instead, watch the Superhero Movie, and sit back and laugh for a while. We don’t live forever.

The Magic of Eragon: Book Review

Title: Eragon

Author: Christopher Paolini

Genre: Fantasy Fiction

Publisher: Alfred A. Knopf

Published: Aug 26, 2003

Hardcover Length: 544

Paperback Length: 528

Magic. Although he does not realize, it surrounds Eragon’s past, present, and future. It will change his life. For better or for worse? That is for you to decide. Eragon’s world extends only to the borders of Palancar Valley, but the young farm boy will soon meet legends in person and have travels worthy of the tales he never believed.

This New York Times bestseller is the first in a series of four called the Inheritance series. The other books in the series are: Eldest, Brisingr, and Inheritance.

Summary:

Eragon is a young man, living with his uncle and cousin, farming off the land, just scraping by. All of this changes when an odd stone appears to him during a hunting trip in the untrusted Spine woods. Soon Eragon is plunged into a world he knows little about, he travels across lands he never imagined, and meets people he thought were just legends. Soon he finds himself torn between two groups, both desperately vying for his loyalty. Eragon’s journey leads him on a different path that he set out to follow, but with the aid of his allies, he just might survive the danger that is ahead. In the end, Eragon finds he is no longer the boy he thought he was, but who he is now is another mystery altogether.

Personal Opinion:

I am a huge fan of this series and specifically, this book. Paolini writes in a way that is indicative of J.R.R Tolkien. He pulls the reader into a world that is so cohesive and extensive that it seems real. The languages that the characters speak are as real as the languages that you and me know. From the geography to the characters, Paolini has deep motivations for each happening. The book is fast paced, but is not all action. Paolini takes time to explore the lore of his world and uses it to draw the reader deeper into the reality he has created. Eragon is an incredible start to an phenomenal series, it draws in the reader and holds them under its spell.

The wizardry of Paolini’s writing takes in the reader and transports them to the world of Alagaesia. The thrill of the chase and the excitement of discovery is shared with the reader as they travel alongside Eragon. Follow him on his journey and maybe you will find a little magic in your life too.

5 Things you Need to Know Before Backpacking/Hiking

5 Things you need to know Before Backpacking/Hiking

Drip, drip, drip. “Mom! The tent is leaking!” It was our first trip together backpacking as a family. It was awful. We hiked 4 miles up to the site then quickly set up the tent in the dark and crashed. And now the tent was leaking. My back was super sore from my backpack and my little sister was whining the whole time we were walking. And now the tent was leaking.

Backpacking/hiking can be miserable if you do it wrong, but it can be super fun and a great experience if you do it the right way. Just listen to these 5 tips, and your backpacking trip will be so much better than it was before.

1. Minimal Stuff:

Make sure you have as minimal stuff as possible. Like the character in the story above, it can be bad for you if you have too much stuff. It can make the trip so much slower because you have to stop more often. When you are packing, just remember… you have to carry it all. So maybe next time don’t take the quilt or the 1,000 page book.

2. Pick a good Campsite:

Imagine this. You just went on a super long trip and you are so tired and sore, you could sleep on the cold hard ground. It’s getting dark, so you find a clear-ish area and start setting up your tent. In the middle of the night, you wake up to the discomfort of a rock in your side. Also, even worse, your tent ripped. TAKE YOUR TIME. I know its hard and you want to just lie down, but you will get a much better night’s sleep for it. Stop before dark. Like the person in this story, you may have kept going and set up your tent in the dark. It’s so much harder that way. Even if you don’t rip it and pick a good campsite, you have to position your light source in a high spot you you can see. Just stop before it gets dark and take time setting up the tent.

3. The whining sister tricks:

Maybe you are on a big day hike, 7 miles lets say. You are traveling with your younger sibling, who is 9. She does not want to hike. She is whining and crying and complaining. Here are 4 things I have found to be infinitely helpful when traveling with the young.

  • Play games. This is probably the best tactic to getting her to keep going. It can also help YOU pass the time on a long trip. She will get distracted and think about something else besides her tired feet. Consider games like riddles, or even make up a game. (Give a new name to all unfamiliar flowers you see on the trail).
  • Race her. I don’t mean running. That could be dangerous if you’re hiking in the mountains. Walk race her. Set a landmark far away on the trail, but not too far away that she will think it’ll take forever. It’s amazing how much energy she doesn’t know she has when she has a goal.
  • Carry her. I know it can seem impossible when you are just as tired as she is, but give it a try. It doesn’t even have to be that long. She will be able to walk for a long time after it, she thinks she just had a big break.
  • Encourage/compliment her. It really is all in her mind. She is certain that she can’t take another step, but when you compliment her, she suddenly thinks it is not all that bad. (This works especially well if you tell her how well she is doing compared to a sibling/parent she recently had a fight with.)

4. WATERPROOF:

Check your gear before you leave. You don’t want to find out 5 miles up a trail that your tent has a hole in it, or your hiking boots are on their last leg. Also, if it’s raining, these 3 things might save you life.

  • A rain jacket. It seems obvious, but it is very important. Even if there is no rain on the forecast, bring a rain jacket. These articles of clothing are light and they can fit into a surprisingly small space.
  • Good Boots. Very important- not only for your comfort, but for your health. If you are hiking in snowy/cold areas, wet feet could be unhealthy. Do research on the boots before you buy them to make sure you are getting good quality.
  • Food. Who doesn’t love soggy bread or squished cheese as a good snack? Pack food into a waterproof bag and make sure it’s sealed. You’ll thank me.

5. Food

Sorry. You can’t eat the 5 course meal you are maybe used to having when you are at home. Camping food is not luxurious, especially if you are backpacking. Pack canned food because it will fit easier and will be unlikely to leak while you’re walking. Here are two good camping meals.

  • Chicken curry. Use canned pineapples and raisins with the chicken. You can also use a few choice spices to enhance the flavor.
  • Rice and beans. Beef and beans and rice with onion are all that goes into this simple meal. You can cook the rice in a pot and the beans in a pan.

To travel on foot like backpacking and hiking and have a good time doing it, you’re going to want to keep in mind these 5 points. Minimal stuff, picking good campsites, sister tricks, and keeping gear waterproof can all go a long way toward making your hiking trip better than ever. This way, you won’t end up like the unfortunate girl in the story above.

Creating Student Bloggers in 5 Easy-To-Follow Steps!

It is estimated that 2 million blog posts are written everyday. That is over 10 million per week.

The sheer amount of content makes learning about and teaching this writing task daunting. Nevertheless, my students and I faced this challenge head on as we worked together to craft and publish the first of what will hopefully be many posts. The following is the step-by-step approach we used to get comfortable and confident with blogging.

Step 1: Write!

Before I introduced the blogging writing task, I wanted students to have a wealth of ideas to pull from for their first posts. So, we spent a few class periods writing to gather ideas. First, we curated expert lists. Students had five minutes to list as many topics they considered themselves “experts” on. After we listed and discussed some of our expertise, we returned to the items and brainstormed types of writing we could do on the different topics. For example, one student who considers himself an expert on backpacking realized he could write a how-to guide or keep a journal of his backpacking trips.

Another list we created lamented all our pet peeves. After students furiously scribbled annoyances for five minutes. they had to chance to voice their pet peeves to each other through conversation. I eventually had to cut the diatribes off after several noisy minutes and invited students to unleash their complaints on paper through longer freewrites.

Finally, we spent an entire class period doing writing sprints. For the first round, we sprinted through crafting one minute top five lists of entertainment, attractions, activities, bests, and worsts. We then revisited the quick brainstorms and wrote for longer, five minute bursts in different modes: review, tutorial, guide, travel, and fandom.

Step 2: Notice

Rather than lecture on a solitary approach to crafting a blog post, we spent several class periods reading and noticing. On day one, groups of students focused on one popular type of post (they chose from reviews, tutorials, travel journals, ultimate guides, fandom, and art/photography) and explored as many blogs within this type as possible. While they explored, they created a list of observations and curated a resource of examples. On day two, each group shared their findings and pointed out exemplars to the class.

Step 3: Keep Noticing

Stuck on how to start? Study model hooks! Not sure how to format or develop the post? Look at how others did it! Clueless on how to end? Which blog endings do you enjoy most? We drew inspiration from other writers throughout each part of our writing process.

To get our writing started, I gathered a collection of model hooks to share with students. We discussed and experimented with leads that asked questions, showed enthusiasm, used dialogue, got descriptive, created figurative comparisons, etc.

To continue the flow of our writing, we worked in groups to study and notice how others developed their posts. In groups, students closely studied one sample post and highlighted model sentences, noted structural moves, and listed supporting details. They then moved around and studied their classmates’ observations; noting what might work for their writing.

Finally, to guide our endings we turned to a blog post on this topic – 7 Powerful Ways to End Your Next Blog Post. This blogger encourages writers to summarize, motivate, link, and question readers at the close of their posts.

Step 4: Talk about it

Just like any writing task, I gave my students multiple opportunities to conference about their writing. They worked through their ideas and drafts with a writing mentor and revised and edited with each other. Since our audience reaches beyond the classroom with these posts, the goal is to feel confident and comfortable with the final product before we hit publish. While this step is listed fourth, it really was an ongoing part of our writing process.

Step 5: Publish it!

After much trial and error (my school’s firewall blocks many blogging sites), I finally settled on EduBlogs.org as our class blogging platform. The site is relatively user

friendly and includes many key features for an unbeatable price – free! It was a little time-consuming to get each student added as a blogger – I needed to send individual invitations to each student’s email, and then guide them through changing the automatically generated passwords to more user-friendly passwords.  However, the platform does allow the teacher to determine each student’s role in the blog – subscriber, contributor, author, editor, or administrator.  If you want to moderate posts before publication, invite students to take on the role of a contributor. However, since I hope my students will blog on their own and outside of class requirements, I invited them to blog as authors, which enables them to post independently. I still reserve the ability, as the administrator, to edit or delete posts if necessary.

Do you blog? If so, what do you do to make your voice stand out among the more than two million who post daily? What advice to you have for me and my students as we continue exploring and contributing to the world of blogging? Please post a comment below!
